3kN Heat Sink Rocket Engine

Project Type

Rocketry

Project Overview

In this ambitious project, I spearheaded the design and development of a 3kN heat sink rocket engine, utilizing ethanol and liquid oxygen as propellants. This endeavor not only showcased my engineering skills but also my commitment to hands-on application and problem-solving in the field of rocketry.

Design & Calculations

The project commenced with an in-depth study of relevant textbooks and resources, leading to the meticulous creation of spreadsheets for precise calculation. My focus was on determining the optimal dimensions of the combustion chamber and injector geometries. This phase was critical in laying the groundwork for the practical aspects of the project.

CAD Modeling & Simulation

Using Solidworks CAD software, I developed detailed models of the entire engine, including the pintle injector and the combustion chamber. To ensure functionality and efficiency, I conducted CFD modelling and simulation using the Solidworks Flow Simulation tool package. Simulation particularly focusied on the combustion chamber and injector to validate their design and injection spray patterns.

Manufacturing & Assembly

Transitioning from design to reality, I single-handedly manufactured all components of the engine in my garage using my lathe, including the precise pintle injector. My skills in welding and machining were pivotal in assembling these components into a cohesive unit.

The practical knowledge gained from handling my own designed components and understanding the importance of tolerances & fits were extremely valuable.

Fluid Delivery System

Contributing further to the project, I played a significant role in designing the fluid delivery system. This system was responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of propellants from storage tanks to the engine. I incorporated various valves and instruments, ensuring precise control and monitoring of the system.

Successful Engine Firing

The project culminated in the successful firing of the rocket engine, a testament to the effectiveness of the design, manufacturing, and testing processes I preformed and oversaw. This achievement was not just a personal milestone, but also a significant achievement for our team and university.

Skills and Learning

Throughout this project, I gained extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in various facets of rocket engine development, including design, manufacturing, simulation, and testing. This journey has been instrumental in shaping my skills as an aspiring rocket engineer, ready to take on the challenges of this dynamic field.
